    Reporting on Individual Achievement

    Writing and Reading Classes

THRASS stands for “TEACHING HANDWRITING READING AND SPELLING SKILLS”.

THRASS is a revolutionary approach to teaching English that provides learners of all ages and abilities not just with handwriting, reading and spelling skills – but also with valuable life skills training.

THRASS is a whole-school synthetic phonics programme for teaching learners of all ages and abilities using pictures and keywords – it is a systematic, explicit phonics and language teaching program for teachers, educational psychologists, speech pathologists and parents.

Using 10 features, 4 phases and 10 stages, THRASS helps learners to understand the building blocks of the English language. It teaches them about the 44 phonemes (speech sounds) of spoken English and the 120 graphemes (spelling choices) of written English.

With the use of a multi-sensory (visual, auditory and kinaesthetic) approach to teach meta-cognitive strategies (thinking skills) that empower learners with lifelong word-solving skills, the THRASS phonographic program teaches learners the relationships between phonemes and graphemes (that when spelling we change phonemes to graphemes and when reading we change graphemes to phonemes).

    Children are taught:

READING – changing graphemes to phonemes
SPELLING – changing phonemes to graphemes

THRASS is for teaching the English letters, speech sound and spelling choices – and these building blocks are introduced and reinforced through the inter-related skills of handwriting, reading and spelling.

It is assumed that these skills are further developed and reinforced through the normal reading and writing experiences of an English curriculum. In particular, it is assumed that the learners are regularly helped to use pictures, context and spelling choice cues to read signs, texts and suitable books.

    Sports

Being outdoors and doing Sports is crucial to the well being of all children. Every year we host a Sports Day to highlight the children and we invite all families along to this fabulous day.

  • Planning

Dolphin Play~Pen School will plan activities that are appropriate, challenging, educational and of interest, to extend children’s learning and development. Teachers will work closely with children, developing child initiated discussions and extending children’s interests.
Our programme provides opportunities for children to learn independently and collaboratively. The environment is organised so learning opportunities challenge and extend children’s thinking as they explore during developmental time.

    Mat times

Our mat times provide children with the opportunity to discuss daily activities, explore our topic, learn new mathematical and literacy concepts, as well as individual news times.

    Group times

Our small group times extend children’s individual goals, strengths and interests. These group times are developmentally and age appropriate for children.
Mat and group times are unique to our programme. They provide incredible learning opportunities for each child
